The role of Digital Certificates
Most of us have come across elusive terms like zero-trust, passwordless, and other trends in cyber security. However, these are generally end-goals that require several underlying technologies to work together. One of these underlying technologies is the digital certificate - including what powers the famous lock icon on browsers to indicate a secure and authentic connection.
A digital certificate used to secure your bank’s website lets you, the user, know that the website is actually the bank’s (and not an attempt at phishing your banking information, for example). It is also used to establish an encrypted connection between you and the bank’s servers, so that attackers can’t intercept and decipher your information as it travels through the internet.
For the more curious readers among us, digital certificates are one of the many elements of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). PKI is a cornerstone of internet security, and it turns out to be really useful to secure organizations’ internal networks and applications too.
